I started my career in recruitment advertising with Austin Knight in 1988 as a typographer. Moving up through the ranks of the Creative department I soon settled into the role of Art Director. My interest and qualification in photography also saw me take responsibility for photoshoots as and when the need arose.
Joining TMP Worldwide in 1997 as a Senior Art Director, I soon started to produce award winning work for clients such as ARUP, Barclays and The National Probation Service. After being Lead Art Director on a number of key accounts, I became Creative Director in 2007, mentoring and developing a team of 14 creatives.

I started freelancing from June 2009, working at many of London's top Employee Communications agencies. I've subsequently been involved in a huge variety of work projects, from social media campaigns, experiential events, interactive videos, website design, employer branding, visual/brand identity, as well as directing global video & photo shoots (...at one point simultaneously)

FREELANCE ART DIRECTOR/CREATIVE DIRECTOR
2009 - present
Since June 2009 I have been freelancing for various employee communication agencies in London. I started out working with Jonathan Richards at Penna on the BBC careers website. From there I had a years stint at Work Comms, taking over from their Creative Director as the lead Art Director on the MARS account. From there, I stood in as Interim Head of Creative at TMP for 7 months, followed by a similar position at Stafford Long. After 8 months at Stafford Long I split the next 3 months between Work Comms and Penna, before spending the next 17 months at Penna where I was the Art Direction lead on the Aldi account. From Penna I moved across to Tonic, where I worked solidly for 31 months, working across many different projects and clients, and moving into the position of Consultant Creative Director.
Over this time, the type of work that I’ve got involved in has varied massively. Pockets of print still remain, but interactive content now plays a huge part in my day-to-day solutions. I’ve worked on social media campaigns, experiential events, interactive videos, website design and various digital content. One year I also directed two global video shoots simultaneously, resulting in some 50+ videos.

CREATIVE DIRECTOR
TMP Worldwide, Chancery Lane, London
2007 - 2009
Headed up a team of 14. Some key responsibilities included managing and motivating the team to produce quality creative work, and to run the teams appraisals through the year. I was also involved in, and presented, many tenders and pitches that have come through the department. As a Creative Director, I was exposed to many different parts of the business, and a huge variety of projects, across a wide client base. These included traditional media, as well as digital, and also video, which I have directed for a number of clients. I was still lead Art Director on a lot of TMP’s largest accounts, and had regular contact with clients via briefings and presentations.

SENIOR ART DIRECTOR
TMP Worldwide, Soho Square/Chancery Lane, London
1997 - 2007
I had lead responsibility for many large recruitment campaigns, that cover a wide range of advertising mediums, including traditional media, video, radio, ambient and also web. As a senior member of the Creative Department in London, I took on more of a mentoring role towards the more junior Art Directors within the team.

DESIGNER/ART DIRECTOR/PHOTOGRAPHER
Austin Knight UK Ltd, Chelmsford, Essex
1994 - 1997
Having transferred to another office within Austin Knight, my position moved onto more of an Art Directors role. Working with a copywriter to come up with creative concepts for advertising solutions, my new role also included a lot more contact with clients, ranging from taking the initial creative brief, presenting the proposed solutions, to taking final approval of wet proofs if the job included print work. Whilst AK was a big company, working in one of the regional offices (22 people) meant that my role involved me overseeing a job right through to the final product. I also took on a secondary role as an in-house photographer.

TYPOGRAPHER/VISUALISER/DTP DESIGNER
Austin Knight UK Ltd, Welwyn, Hertfordshire
1989 - 1994
I started out as a typographer, marking up copy to be sent out to typesetters. Over time my role evolved into Visualiser/DTP Designer. Most of my work consisted of designing and setting of adverts, leaflets, newsletters and brochures. My duties also consisted of print buying and commissioning photographers and illustrators.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN,
I have known and worked with Jono for around ten years and consider him to be a valued friend and a reliable, hard working and fun colleague. He has an indomitable spirit and a wicked sense of humour, both invaluable in a pressured, deadline driven environment. He’s both a barometer for the agency mood and a trusted lieutenant who can change the way those around him feel and act. His people management skills are instinctive and incredibly effective. His ability to produce complex (and brilliantly simple) work for even more complex clients is also fantastic. He will be a great credit and a huge fillip to any department.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN,
As Head of Graduate Recruitment at Arup I started working with Jonathan in 2000. We immediately formed a good working relationship. Jonathan’s understanding of Arup and our unique culture was amazing, I sometimes felt that he understood and appreciated our culture better than many of our staff. Furthermore, he always answered the brief accurately and creatively.
His high quality work was reflected in our advertisements being nominated at industry awards e.g. we won the Best Graduate Recruitment Advertisement award at The Recruitment Ad Awards in 2002. We were also short-listed on several occasions. This was even more impressive considering the relative smallness of our budget.
I feel that Jonathan’s creative thinking and conceptual skills are first rate, his communication client skills are excellent and I have thoroughly enjoyed working with him.
